Greenland Denied on Whale Hunt

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The International Whaling Commission on Thursday rejected a request by indigenous Greenland fishermen to kill 10 humpback whales a year. The fishermen had offered to swap rights to eight fin whales for the humpbacks.

Denmark, to which Greenland belongs, pushed for a vote, saying the plan was supported by a commission report that found that stocks of humpback whales off Greenland had increased.

But commission officials said the request went beyond subsistence purposes and appeared to involve commercial interests in violation of the commission’s commercial whaling moratorium.
