Angry consumers blocked roads and railroad tracks and closed businesses in many parts of India to protest the government’s decision to increase fuel prices. Twenty members of a hard-line Hindu nationalist party were arrested after they disrupted train service in a suburb of Mumbai, the city once known as Bombay. The police used water cannons to disperse protesters in New Delhi. In West Bengal State, schools and businesses were closed and several trains were delayed or canceled.
